Rugs from Demerci, north of Kula in western Anatolia, are typified by this design, with a pair of urns issuing flowers framed by borders of zig-zag serrated leaves. Rugs of this type were woven throughout the 18th and 19th century, and they have much in common with other western Anatolian rugs - for example those from the town of Oushak - but are usually smaller in size. This example, however, is of unusually large format.
